Discover Hidden Gems: Photography Along Backroads

This is my van after taking gravel roads home. I was returning from delivering some artwork to a gallery in Wilmington, Illinois. In other states one can find many things to photograph when driving on gravel or dirt roads. In Illinois, not so much. The only shots I got were from when I was on paved roads. Go figure.

Here is a shot I got while driving down a dusty dirt road in Kansas a few years ago.

There were so many twists and turns in this road, I had no idea where I was. If you asked me to take you to this location, I would struggle to find it again. I would need to pore over some road maps and do a Google search first. That is how remote this was.

This next shot could have been one from a gravel road in Illinois had I approached from the other direction. As it was, I found this right where the paved road stopped and the gravel road began.

On another trip to Kansas I explored the dirt roads, of which there are many. I came across this building not far from the entrance. It was near a business that does some type of outdoor work. I don’t recall if it was a gravel company, or something like that.

I have seen many wonderful shots from other photographers. They have captured photographs along dirt or gravel roads that meander through their states. If you know any of these roads, please let me know. I like to travel and explore new places.

If you like to travel the backways of our country, let me know. Maybe we can hook up and collaborate on a project.
