Interview with Sara Krogul

Recently I asked several artist friends if they would answer some questions. I posed the same interview to each.

The first one is from Sara Krogul. I met her last year in northern Indiana at a show she put on. You can check out NWI Art Show on Facebook to learn more about the show.

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?

Springfield,IL  is where I grew up. It has grown quite a bit since I left. My art definitely reflects my roots. I love nature and the creativity that lives in it. I am inspired by the calm and beauty it holds. I enjoy portraits at times but I am most inspired to paint animals, birds, and landscapes.

Who are your biggest artistic influences?

Local artists that I have met in the last year have been great artistic influences. Their devotion and talent has been a great influence for me to keep creating. Art galleries inspire me, I love seeing their work up close.

Tell me about your favorite medium.

Watercolor is my favorite medium at this time. I love how the layers build up to create something extraordinary. They are very relaxing to work with and the colorful art they create is truly beautiful.

Where do you find inspiration?

Nature, Art Galleries, Classes, and staying involved in the art community

How do you define success as an artist?

If it makes you happy and brings you joy, that is success. If people enjoy your art, as much as you do, that is the icing on the cake!

Does art help you in other areas of your life?

Art has helped me in so many ways. I see every detail when I look at something, especially if I am going to draw or paint it. Art has also helped me to let my guard down. Art is not for everyone and the conversation and feelings it brings up are all individualistic. Communication is important and we can learn from and inspire each other. I enjoy learning new ways of creating art and watching my craft grow. I have also learned to work hard and enjoy the benefits of those efforts. Art has also created a community for me and many others. It is important to be a part of the art community, as art brings so much joy to my life. Previously, I was more introverted about my art and recently I have become more involved with the art community. It has changed my life, brought me so much joy, and I have been inspired to create more artwork!

How has your style changed over time?

I used to do more charcoal and portraits. Now I work with watercolors and pastels, The vibrant colors and nature scenes have been a big change since my charcoal days.

How do you manage a work-life balance as an artist?

I always make time to make art. It gives me the energy and joy I need while I am away from work. Art is as important to me as a home cooked meal. It nourishes the soul.

What are you working on at the moment?

I have two going at the moment. A watercolor portrait and soft pastel horse that should be completed very soon.

How do you stay connected and up to date with the art world?

 Social media and the internet.

How do you promote your work and your shows?

Social media and the internet.

How useful has social media been for you?

It has been the driving force. I had an idea for a local NWI Art Show. One month later we had 35 artists for the art show. Could not have had the success of hundreds of people without social media!

What is the biggest challenge of being an artist?

Self doubt can creep in and challenge you. For me, it created years of avoidance in making art. Another challenge was finding a way to allow myself to enjoy the process and outlet. It wasn’t going to be the way I pay my bills and I thought I had to put it aside as bigger responsibilities took over my life. That was not the correct thinking; creativity has to be nurtured and protected in order to see the purpose it will have in an artist’s life.

Exposure is also a challenge, and I am learning how to keep local art in the forefront of my community.

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an artist?

I have taken local art classes to help me grow and develop as an artist. I am always looking for creative ways to make art an integral part of my life. The internet has given me a lot of exposure to techniques and knowledge of various mediums. I continually research to learn more and expose myself to the ever changing and developing art world.

What advice do you have to give to aspiring artists?

Never give up. Keep practicing. Try new artforms. Take local art classes. Visit galleries. Stay in touch with the art community.

Sara is great to work with. I look forward to doing more shows with her. Thank you Sara.
