If you personally know me, you know I like to read. Being a photographer, I read books about photography. I read other stuff as well, things like entrepreneur books, business books, history and biographies. But this post will deal with just photography books.
I read nine of them last year. Some were really good, others I almost didn’t finish but I persevered.
Here they are in the order I read them, as well as some thoughts on each.
Omaggio a/Homage to Henri Cartier-Bresson: Edition in Italian and English. I enjoyed looking at his work in this short book. The accompanying descriptions by various artists were difficult to get through (and I’m talking about the English ones). If you are a fan of Henri Cartier-Bresson, I would recommend this book.
A Short Course in Photography: Digital by Jim Stone. Apparently not that good as I don’t even remember anything about it.
The DAM Book: Digital Asset Management for Photographers by Peter Krogh. A little outdated, but still there is some useful information in it. If you are just starting out, and want a work-flow, this may be for you.
How to Make Money While You are Sleeping: A Photographer’s Guide to Passive Income – And Other Savvy Business Strategies by Rick Sammon. This is the first book of Rick’s that I read. It won’t be the last, as you can see from my list. Excellent ideas throughout.
Digital Photography Essentials by Tom Ang. An okay book.
Photographically Speaking: A Deeper Look at Creating Stronger Images by David duChemin. I have been following David for several years now. I subscribe to his newsletters (he has several). I have read several of his books now. If you like his style, I recommend him.
The Soul of the Camera: The Photographer’s Place in Picture Making by David duChemin. Ditto
Photography: History. Art. Technique by Tom Ang. Another okay book. Some good history about photography.
Photo Quest: Discovering Your Photographic & Artistic Voice by Rick Sammon. A great book! I can’t wait to read more of Rick’s works. I follow him on social media, and I recommend you do too.
Several of these books have made it to my shelf, whereas the others are long gone. If you were to buy any photo books, I suggest going with Rick Sammon or David duChemin. You will get your money’s worth from either author.
What art related books did you read last year?
